Holland, Tedder, Carroll, Royal family research expanded during 2020. My 4th great grands had the surname of Royal, Ryall. I had known for decades that my third greats were Tedders that came to Stokes County along with their grown children, including my great grands, Elizabeth Tedder Holland and Hinton Holland.
It was not until this summer that I made the connection to the Royal surname. Mary Carroll Tedder and husband William Tedder made the move from Sampson County, NC to Stokes sometime around 1840. Both William and Mary are buried in the Friendship Community of Stokes County. Mary's brother, Hardy Royal Carroll had settled in Stokes County after the War of 1812.
Mary Carroll was born 1797 in Sampson County. I understand that Sampson was formed from lands taken Duplin County. in 1794. Records sometimes show Duplin and sometimes Sampson as I research this family. Mary's parents were Alexander Carroll and Lucy Royal.
On this post, I will focus on the Royal branch of the family tree.

BIRTH 1725 • Henrico, Virginia, United States DEATH 15 NOV 1794 • Sampson, North Carolina, United States

William served in the Revolutionary War.
I am making an assumption that William was living in North Carolina in the Duplin County area when this regiment was formed.
He is listed as being buried in the John Royal Cemetery. Following is information copied from find a grave.
Off Hwy 242 onto Reindeer Lane. Follow dirt road for .3 of a mile to old Royal Homeplace (very lttle of house is left). Cemetery is northwest about 150 feet from house.
There are no readable gravestones. Just a clump of brush.
The graves that are listed here are per Royal Family
Tradition.(my family) Readable stones were moved to Piney Green Church and those graves are listed there (bodies were not moved).
Although gravesite is apparent - THERE ARE NO STONES LEFT HERE and all stones that were moved to Piney Green have their memorials located there.
(per visit to site in April 2012)
