Mary Carroll Tedder is my 3rd great grandmother. I will start with her because she and my 3rd great grandfather moved to Stokes county from Chatman County after 1840. Her married daughter and son-in-law would also make the move. These families would settle along Neatman's Creek and the Friendship Road area of Stokes County. For many years I wondered why they had packed up and moved. 2020 has given the opportunity for more research and I was able to uncover the maiden name Carroll as well place some of the missing pieces in this genealogy puzzle.
Mary was born in Sampson County, NC. in 1797. Her father was Alexander Carrell and her mother was Lucy Royal. The census records indicate the family lived around Fayetteville, NC. At the time it was called Cross Creek and the Great Wagon Road allowed much trade.
Now there is an old cemetery off of Mountain View Road. These graves were marked by stones and is referred to the Carroll-Ferguson cemetery.
The war of 1812 came along and Hardy Carroll joined up. He made a friend in Nick Frost from Stokes County. Nick's father ran a forge and I am making an assumption that this may be of Mountain view Road as a private road is named Forge Mill. The Frost family were neighbors of the Fergusons. Hardy Carroll would marry Elizabeth ( Betsey) Ferguson and settle in the Mountain View Community.
Nicholas Frost was a witness to the marriage. The Frost family moved out of the area and the forge was sold.
Mary and her family would follow her brother to the area of Neatman's Creek. The line is Carroll/Tedder/Holland. War is never a good thing but because of this friendship between my 3rd great grand uncle and Mr. Frost there are many in the Stokes and Forsyth area that can claim Carroll ancestry.
